Why Rejection and Criticism Hurt So Much (and What to Do About Them)

If you want to achieve something original with your life, sooner or later you will have to face up to rejection and criticism.

Whether you’re an artist, creative, freelancer, athlete, entrepreneur or employee, you’ll put yourself forward for opportunities, only to be rejected – maybe many times.

And when you do manage to get yourself or your work out there for the world to see, you expose yourself to criticism – not all of the ‘constructive’ kind!

These are the two big challenges I address in my new book Resilience: Facing Down Rejection and Criticism on the Road to Success.

Based on over sixteen years spent coaching people to achieve their goals in spite of rejection, criticism and other obstacles, it’s designed to help you persist in the face of adversity and make your dreams a reality.

Read the first five chapters of Resilience for free

You can read the first five chapters for free in the preview window below. (If you’re reading via email you may need to click through to the online version to read it.)

The opening chapters explain:

  • Why rejection and criticism hurt so much (no, you’re not being ‘over sensitive’)
  • What two Japanese demons can teach you about resilience
  • Why fear is a positive sign that you’re on the right track (and how to deal with it)
  • How the idea for the book was staring me in the face for years before I saw it

I hope you enjoy the preview – if you want to read the whole book you can do so on just about any computer, tablet or smartphone, or on your preferred eReader, including of course the Amazon Kindle.

Resilience is available from Amazon US, Amazon UK, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, Amazon India, Amazon Italy, Amazon Japan and Amazon Spain.

You don’t need a Kindle to read Resilience

Click here to download a FREE reading app and read Resilience on the device of your choice – PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android, or other smartphone or tablet.

Once you’ve installed the app, you can use the links above to get your copy of Resilience and start reading instantly.

Alternatively you can get a PDF or a copy formatted for the iPad/iBooks, Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo etc. from Smashwords.

The book has only been available for a few days, but it has already made it to the Top 10 of the Amazon.com Creativity Best Seller lists for both the Kindle Store and the main Book Store.

I’ve received lots of positive feedback from readers who tell me they are finding Resilience very encouraging and helpful. I hope you find it helpful on your own journey.

  • Much looking forward to reading this, Mark. I'll be writing a summary for the chaps at Actionable Books as well, mining the actionable steps from it. Surprised me to realize you hadn't already written this book long ago!

Any chance there'll be a paperback for my bookshelf?

    • Thanks Joel. There will probably be a paperback at some point in the future - I love print books as much as anyone. Just walking before I run. :-)

  • Looking forward to reading the first chapters Joel! I'd also be interested in the print version...ever thought of using Create Space? It would probably be an easy transition from the Kindle version.

    Cheers!

    • Yes CreateSpace is one of the options I'm considering for the paperback. I want to be sure the finished product is of the right standard, so I'll compare different services and see which is the best.

  • Congratulations Mark! Just bought the book and can hardly wait to read it. I know it will provide lots to think about and to use.

    Well done, you.

  • Dear Mark,
I read the introduction of the book last night and cried because it spoke deep into my heart and nerves. It felt like a shoulder that I could lay my head on. This book will be a Christmas gift to myself and I cannot wait to read it.
    Thank you,
    Anna

      • Thank you Mark,
I am already half my way with your book now. I have come to my feet, re-evaluating, mirroring myself in your valuable questions and rethinking ... BIG :)
