I agree business should be fun, if it's fun then you will never work a day in your life. Enjoyed the article very much. PS I found you via Copyblogger. Thanks

It's heartening to see that John has successfully made a career for himself and his art by dodging the traditional approach. The internet is truly transforming the options available to artists, which means galleries and art critics no longer get to be the all-powerful gatekeepers of the art world.

It's true that it definitely adds hard work (going into business for yourself), but it also adds a hefty dose of independence.

Great interview!

There was a ton of great points made in this interview like:

"If there is anything you are unwilling to think about, you have lost the ability to think." (and the other snippets that the previous commenters mentioned).

I'm definitely going to be looking into John T. Unger and his work a lot now.

Also, its great to find an artist who not only has a talent but the business savvy to back it up which is a bit of a rarity.

I agree business should be fun, if not I would just go back to working a traditional 9-5 job and be a clock watcher. My older brother just the other day asked me what do I do all day, if he only knew the possibilities.

In order to create something that is truly new, one of the best paths is to explore the “unthinkable.”

That's the part that resonates most for me. The fun part too.

All in all, very encouraging info and advice - will look out for you on twitter too.

Great interview. I like the distinctions you make about your roles as artist, designer and entrepreneur.
